What is Underfloor Heating?

We have been publishing blogs for a while now at Hotwire. We have covered all sorts of different topics about floor heating. However, we have never covered the simple topic of “What is Under Floor Heating”.

So see the following for a simple explanation of what Floor Heating is.

At Hotwire we offer a few different styles of Electric Floor Heating, however, they are built on the same basic principle of an Electric Heating element spread across the floor.

So let’s dive into a more detailed explanation.

Installation:

Electric floor heating involves spreading an electric heating element across the floor. This element is then connected to a Thermostat that will help you run your floor heating system.

The flooring is then installed over the heating element

The Heating Element will then heat the floor, the floor will then heat the room. As hot air rises, the heated air around the floor rises to gently heat the entire room. It is beautiful, gentle, and luxurious.

Floor Heating is also generally a lot cheaper to purchase and run than most people think, it will also add value to your home.

Under Tile Heating: (Loose Wire)

Loose wire Under Tile Heating is a heating element on a spool that is run around the room at even increments. Generally around 60mm between each cable.

It is installed directly under the tile (or other floor surface).

Under Tile Heating is great for almost every room in the house, including bathrooms, living rooms, even Kitchens, studies, etc.

Under Tile Heating Mats.

Under Tile Heating Mats are a very similar product to “Loose Wire”, however, the heating element is fixed to a self-adhesive Fibreglass mesh. This can make installation much easier and quicker.

The Heating mats are suited to smaller rooms like Bathrooms and Laundries. They can be used in living areas, but it would normally involve running multiple mats back to a single thermostat

In Screed Heating. (Loose Wire)

Like its Under Tile equivalent, Loose Wire In Screed Heating is an element on a spool spread across the floor.

In Screed heating is installed under a sand and cement screed.

It is typically used in bathrooms or in living areas where you are polishing the concrete floor.

In Screed Heating Mats

Again, like the Under Tile Mats, with In Screed Mats, the heating element is fixed to a Fibreglass mesh

This product would typically be used in Bathrooms or possibly laundries.

Thermostats

Every Hotwire product comes with a fully programmable touch screen Thermostat to help you run your floor heating. You can even upgrade to a WiFi Thermostat to control your heating from an App.
